TITLE:

American Indian Literature and Resources for Teachers 7-12

DESCRIPTION:

This course qualifies as I.E.F.A. Level II.  Through demonstration and interactive activities, participants will:

·        review the Essential Understandings,

·        discuss various themes, and historical and literary contexts in American Indian literatures using Roots and Branches  and a 250-page binder of resources,

·        read, listen to and interact with poetry, novels, short stories, biographies, autobiographies, some traditional stories, DVD and Video,

·        practice critical literacy strategies while examining stereotypes in literatures,

·        view and practice activities in units developed for the new IEFA Language Arts Curriculum 7-12.

·        design units or lessons for using American Indian Literatures at their grade levels. 

Books and resources listed on http://montana.ascd.org  website will be available for review and loan during the workshop.

Limit of 25

CREDIT:

15 OPI renewal units OR 1 graduate credit through Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N will charge $130.00 for this credit which is paid at the workshop.

EXPENSES:

Participants will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meals.

FEE POLICY:

$40.00 per participant if GTCC member or MNCESR region including; Havre Public Schools & Great Falls Public Schools /  $100.00 per participant for any other schools

After June1st registration fees must be sent at the time of registration.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

 Root and Branches and the manual for this class are provided free of charge.   $80.00 worth of materials for each participant provided through an Indian Education for All grant.
