Title:   What Works in Schools and Classrooms (Guiding Learners to Achieve Understanding) Planning for GTCC Implementation of Marzano’s Research

Description:  Administrators will have this opportunity to preview Dr. Jean Conyers, the Fall In-Service presenter, and they will then be provided with the overview on how the GTCC will begin the implementation of Marzano’s research over the next two years.

Dr. Conyers will highlight components of What Works in Schools and Classroom Instruction That Works. The goal of the workshop is to initiate a two-year effort to provide the necessary tools, research and strategies needed to begin and sustain implementation of effective practices by building leadership and classroom teachers.

Dr. Conyers will share with us an overview of the school and classroom level factors that have the greatest impact on student achievement. At the school level, practices related to providing a guaranteed and viable curriculum as well as effective reporting practices will be emphasized. At the classroom level, she will provide practical applications of research to enhance learning through the use of

o   Similarities, differences, analogies and metaphors

o   Non-linguistic representations of understandings

o   Summarizing and notetaking

o   Building academic vocabulary

Throughout the presentation, Dr. Conyers will share her experiences in helping build leadership teams to develop processes that have been effective in creating school-wide culture for lifelong learning.

The session will include discussions and opportunity to provide feedback on district needs and goals and how this plan can support member-district efforts for school improvement.

Presenter:  Dr. Jean Conyers

Dr. Jean Conyers has worked with Dr. Robert Marzano for the past 25 years first as a colleague at McREL and then as a consumer of his research and writings in her roles as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in various Chicago-area school systems. Now as ASCD faculty member, Jean continues to work with Dr. Marzano by assisting educators in the practical application of research in schools and classrooms.

Her consulting and speaking engagements include numerous school districts in North America and abroad. Conyers has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for her leadership role in public education and has published numerous articles in Educational Leadership, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis Quarterly, and Educational Administrative Quarterly. Conyers is committed to helping educators overcome the challenges of preparing our children for their future. She strives to help students hold themselves accountable by focusing on research-based instruction, and she understands that the best uses of technology help teachers and administrators make data-driven decisions about their students' performance.
