GTCC Learning Teams in the GTCC 2000-2001

LEARNING TEAMS - Teaming Up to Learn about Assessment

Five GTCC districts, involving 94 teachers, have or are nearing completion of a professional development program that allows them to re-think they way they assess in the classroom. Based on the work of Dr. Rick Stiggins, Assessment Training Institute, Portland, Oregon, the teachers have spent 18 weeks studying "Student-Involved Classroom Assessment". The program allows teachers to collaborate together in small "learning teams" of 3 - 6 teachers. The program provides teachers with a text that explains in understandable language how a teacher can acquire classroom assessment competencies. Further, the program provides support in the form of a workbook to "Practice with Student-Involved Classroom Assessment" in their individual classroom. (Click Here for More about Learning Teams).

Cut Bank Public Schools, Cut Bank, Montana, was the recipient of a DART's mini-grant from the Montana Eisenhower Advisory Team in the Fall of 2000. Concepts of the grant included the formation of learning teams for assessment literacy in their district, and data strategies for the Golden Triangle Curriculum Cooperative's newly developed assessment for K-12 Mathematics. They were invited to present their project in Whitefish, Montana Saturday, April 28, 2001.

The learning teams came together for their final meeting to share, provide feedback, and to "show and tell." It was a fun evening and informative for all in attendance. Craig Barringer, Elementary principal, has been the lead administrator for the project in Conrad.
