The main communities of the mouth of the Marias River are Loma
and Fort Benton. Loma (at the location of Decision Point) is a
direct product of the success of Fort Benton. Today the town of Fort
Benton looks somewhat as it did in early times. As it was sited in
1965 for the historical registry this town has made a full circle
returning to the past for its economic survival. Tourism plays an
important role in its future economy. It is also the hub for one of
the largest wheat producing areas in the state of Montana today.
Fort Benton retains much of its “steamboat days” character. Many of
the buildings located within its National Historic Landmark District
were constructed during the golden years of the 1880’s.
The fauna of this region has added to the area's tourism economy.
There is extensive hunting of big game animals, including white tail
and mule deer, upland game birds and vast trophy fishing
opportunities for walleye, sturgeon, and catfish.
