Please judge your level of proficiency for each of the following technology competencies. Check the button that best reflects your current level of proficiency (be honest but be kind). This tool will be used to help identify needs for technology training planning and for self-analysis to determine what areas you should continue to learn and practice.
Novice - I am willing to learn but have very little experience. Near Proficient - I am getting better. I know the basics. Proficient - I'm very good and use the computer a lot. Advanced - I'm very knowledgeable and can do a lot of things with technology well.
Basic Computer Operations
Novice - I've never used a computer. Near Proficient - I use a computer primarily for pleasure. Proficient - I can use the computer to load software and print my work. I can change the way my computer desktop looks. Advanced - I can troubleshoot most error messages. I can hook up other periphial devices to my computer successfully.
File Management
Novice - I have never saved things on my computer. Near Proficient - I have saved things on my computer but do not know where they are. Proficient - I have saved things on my computer and I can find them when I need them. Advanced - I know how to create folders for organizing my saved files and sometimes I make backup copies.
Word Processing
Novice - I have never used a word processor. Near Proficient - I have used a word processor a few times. Proficient - I do some of my work using word processing and I know how to edit to make my work look good. Advanced - I use the word processor for most of my work. I can format and make my work look professional.
Spreadsheet Use
Novice - I have never used a spreadsheet. Near Proficient - I have used a simple, pre-made spreadsheet on occasion. Proficient - I can use a simple spreadsheet. I can make a simple chart or graph. Advanced - I use a spreadsheet to keep track of stats, budgets, and other data for personal/school use.
Database Use
Novice - I have never created or used a database. Near Proficient - I have used a database a few times but have never created one.. Proficient - I can use a database to collect and study data. I have used a database to sort and print information. Advanced - I can use a database to keep track of stats and other data for personal/school use.
Graphics Use
Novice - I have never used pictures or graphics on a computer. Near Proficient - I have selected/created and placed a simple graphic in a document. Proficient - I can design and change graphics using draw and paint tools. I can place graphics in documents. Advanced - I have changed the look of graphics and pictures using photo software.
Internet/Browsers
Novice - I have never used the Internet. Near Proficient - I have used the Internet with the help of others. Proficient - I am able to use the Internet to find information on my own. Advanced - I have created my own webpages.
Telecommunication Use
Novice - I have never used e-mail, chat or video software. Near Proficient - I have used e-mail and other web-conferencing (such as blogs) sites some when others help me. Proficient - I am able to use e-mail and web-conferencing (such as blogs) by myself. I have been in chat groups. I can use video conferencing software/hardware. Advanced - I know how to attach documents and pictures to my e-mail. I have used video conferencing software/hardware. I have my own blog space.
Ethical Use
Novice - I don't know about the rights and wrongs of using technologies. Near Proficient - I know some things about copyright and responsible use. Proficient - I know that there are some sites I shouldn't enter, that I shouldn't copy software or use other's work. Advanced - I understand appropriate technology use and can share that information with others.
Information Seeking/Research
Novice - I have never used an electronic source to gather information, to complete a task or solve a problem. Near Proficient - I can do a simple search for information with electronic sources. Proficient - I can do a complex search using different electronic sources. Advanced - I can narrow my search to match my topic. I can use a variety of electronic sources.
Presentation Skills
Novice - I have never used a computer to do a presentation. Near Proficient - I have given a presentation using text and clipart. Proficient - I have given electronic presentations using text, clip art, digital pictures, sound, etc. Advanced - I have given a sophisticated, well-designed electronic presentation.
Technology Integration
Novice - I haven't used computers or technologies very much. Near Proficient - I've used a computer a little. I know some basic things. Proficient - I've used technology quite a bit, and I'm very good. Advanced - I'm very knowledgeable about computers and software. I do most of my work on a computer.
