Current Teaching Assignment


Please judge your level of proficiency for each of the following technology competencies. Check the button that best reflects your current level of proficiency (be honest but be be kind). This tool will be used to help identify needs for technology training planning and for self-analysis to determine what areas you should continue to learn and practice.


Basic Computer Operations

Novice - Do not use computers in the classroom.
Near Proficient - Use a computer to run a few specific programs. Feel anxious about damaging a machine or the programs.
Proficient - Can set up a computer and peripheral devices, load software, and use operating system tools.
Advanced - Can run 2 or more programs simultaneously (multi-tasking). Can customize the sound and look of my computer. Confident enough to teach others some basics.

File Management

Novice - Do not save documents self created using the computer.
Near Proficient - Can save documents but do not know where they are saved. Do not back up files.
Proficient - Have a filing system. Can locate files quickly and readily. Can back up files on a regular basis.
Advanced - Can run a disk optimizer on hard drive. Use a back up system to make multiple copies of files. Can archive files to conserve hard drive space.

Word Processing

Novice - Do not use a word processor.
Near Proficient - Sometimes use a word processor for simple documents.
Proficient - Use word processor for most of my written work. Can format and edit documents. My work looks professional.
Advanced - Use the Word processor for all of my work. Use the word processor with students for all stages of the writing process.

Spreadsheet Use

Novice - Do not use a spreadsheet.
Near Proficient - Understand the use of a spread sheet. Can create a simple spreadsheet which adds a column of numbers.
Proficient - Can use a spreadsheet for several applications. Can change the format of a spreadsheet. Can use a spreadsheet to make a simple graph or chart.
Advanced - Use a spreadsheet for my work as well as use it with students to help them with their own data keeping and analysis skills.

Database Use

Novice - Do not use a database.
Near Proficient - Understand the use of a database. Can locate information in a pre-made database. Can add or delete data in a database.
Proficient - Can use a database to collect and analyze data. Can create a database from scratch. Can sort and print information in useful layouts.
Advanced - Can use formulas to create summations of numerical data. Use database for my work and use to help students gather and analyze data.

Graphics Use

Novice - Do not use graphics in word processing or presentations.
Near Proficient - Can open create and place simple pictures in documents.
Proficient - Can open, create, modify, and place graphics into documents in order to clarify or simplify my message.
Advanced - Can manipulate and interpret graphics using processing software (i.e., CAD, Photoshop, or Picture It) or video editing software (i.e., IMovie or Microsoft MovieMaker) for the purpose of design or analysis. Promote student interpretation and display using a variety of tools and programs.

Internet/Browsers

Novice - Do not use Internet/Browsers.
Near Proficient - Can start up my own web browser. Can find basic information. Spend little time using the Internet.
Proficient - Able to make good use of web browser. Able to utilize lists of URLs to find educational resources.
Advanced - Able to create HTML pages. Taught students how to use Internet resources.

Telecommunication Use

Novice - Do not use email or instant messaging programs.
Near Proficient - Know the value of getting information via email. Can send some messages via email.
Proficient - Use email to get professional and personal information. Participate in online discussions. Check email regularly. Use instant messaging regularly.
Advanced - Use email for variety of purposes. Can use advanced features of email programs (formatting, attachments, signatures). Use video conferencing software/hardware.

Ethical Use

Novice - Not aware of ethical issues surrounding computer usage.
Near Proficient - Know that some copyright restrictions apply to computer software.
Proficient - Know and demonstrate ethical usage of software and computer usage. Understand the school board policy for the use of copyrighted materials.
Advanced - Aware of a variety of ethical issues involving technology use. Can speak of a variety of audiences about technological issues.

Information Seeking

Novice - Do not seek information in electronic formats.
Near Proficient - Can conduct simple searches with electronic encyclopedias and library software on major topics.
Proficient - Can use a variety of search strategies on several information programs, including the internet and search engines.
Advanced - Have interjected logical search strategies into work with students, showing them the power of good search techniques in finding information relating to their specific questions.

Presentation Skills

Novice - Do not use electronic technologies to save format, or share findings or work.
Near Proficient - Can share findings or work in a single application program such as word processor, spreadsheet, or Power Point.
Proficient - Can incorporate and share findings using multimedia presentation software (i.e. Power Point or SmartBoard notebook) which combines elements from a variety of sources.
Advanced - Can facilitate students' use of a variety of applications to persuasively present their work.

Technology Integration

Novice - Do not see the the need to blend the use of new technologies into classroom learning activities.
Near Proficient - Would like to blend the use of new technologies into classroom more often than now, but there isn't enough time or access to equipment. Need help to understand how to integrate technology into my classroom.
Proficient - Occasionally encourage students to employ technology in their learning. Integrate technology into class experiences on an on-going basis.
Advanced - Frequently encourage students to employ new technologies in their learning. My classroom has become more student centered and technology supported.
