November is National Education month and the week of November 13-17 is American Education Week.
I had favorite educators throughout all of my schooling, but a teacher I will call Amy was probably my most influential. She was a high school English teacher and also taught journalism and yearbook, but it was her personal story that inspired me the most.
In her teens, Amy was out with friends and family boating on the lake. She decided to dive in to take a swim, not realizing the shallow depths of the water. She hit her head and was instantly paralyzed from the neck down; but Amy never let this stop her in life. She overcame her lifelong disability in many ways: becoming a teacher, advocate, mom, and an inspiration to others.
I have taken her story along with me throughout life. It has inspired me personally and has also given me the inspiration I needed to encourage my students daily to work hard, improve themselves, and never give up.
November is a month to intentionally celebrate teachers, but don’t forget to celebrate them, every month of the year - at the GTCC, we CELEBRATE YOU!
