October 5 - World Teacher’s Day! “Over time I have come to believe many children can identify with the helpless, small, insignificant caterpillar, and they rejoice when it turns into a beautiful butterfly. I think it’s a message of hope. It says: I too can grow up. I too can unfold my wings (my talent) and fly into the world”.
October is upon us and with that, brings sports, activities, Homecoming festivities, and many other wonderful opportunities that public school brings our awesome students in rural Montana. As I write this month’s Golden Apple, I am seeing the beauty of Fall - turning to winter and I am reminded of the seasons; the seasons of life. We all go through changes and, as we should, become better versions of ourselves. As you go through the seasons of life, remember to take care of yourself and those around you. Continue to become a better version of YOU, so that you can help your students grow, unfold their wings, and fly out into the world that awaits them.
Top 10 Ideas to Keep Students Healthy & Active During Covid-19
Dance! In your classroom, around your desk, down the hallway, or spaced apart outside.
Use pool noodles cut in half and “drum” on desks, body, floor to music. <videos online>
Take walking breaks - even when the weather turns, just bundle up!
Stretch. Students can stretch just about anywhere. It helps the body and the BRAIN!
Find virtual “gym” videos or stationary physical activity videos online and use them as a brain break in class.
Stand up! Even while maintaining a safe distance while learning, listening, or working - students don’t have to sit.
Act it out! As your students are learning, have them actively use their bodies to act it out!
Allow students to utilize/sit on exercise balls for all/part of their learning day - it supports posture and brain function.
Wall or floor push-ups periodically throughout the day; increases blood flow and brain function.
As the teacher, continually move yourself throughout the room to keep their “vantage point” new - this will also keep you up & moving, keeping your healthier and more engaged with your students!
